7WHATSNEWcont.WORKERSINCOMEAUGMENTATIONPROGRAMATDOLEFILTheWorkersIncomeAugmentaonProgramWINAPisaprogramfundedbythePhilippinegovernment.Itintendstoassistworkersinengagingintobusinesstoaugmenttheirprimaryincome.Businessopportuniescreatedthroughthisprogramprovideworkerswithaddionalsourcesofincomeintheformofsharingprots.Theprogramalsoprovidesemploymentopportuniesforthedependentsoftheworkers.LEAD.PHtheunionrepresenngDolelsworkerswasaccreditedtomanagetheWINAPgrants.InaddionLEAD.PHmustcontributeto20ofthetotalprojectcosts.DolelfacilitatesthemonitoringoftheprogrammanagementandprovidesLEAD.PHwithreusablematerialsfortheirprojectsspacerequirementsrenovaonsandxtures.TheprogramresultedintheopeningofapharmacyinDecember2011.Itprovidestwopeoplewithemployment.LEAD.PHthenstartedmanagingaricemartandaddedameatshoptoitsoperaons.LEAD.PHsfutureplanistoset-upfarmersstallsinordertomakebasiccommodiesmoreaccessibleandaordablenotonlytoitsmembersbutalsototheneighboringcommunies.Thepharmacy DIDYOUKNOW8Forthisnewedionwewouldliketooeryouanexceponalvoyagethroughthepaststarngin1899bytellingyouthestoryofDoleinHonduras.InHondurasDolecountswithoveronecenturyofinfrastruc-turedevelopmentCorporateResponsibilityandsupporttothecommunies.WhenDolearrivedontheAtlancCoastofHondurasLaCeibawasasmallvillage.Todayitisthethirdlargesttownofthecountrywithapopulaonofapproximately200000residents.1899theVaccaroBrothersandSalvadordAntoniarriveinHondurasThehistoryofStandardFruitCompanydeHondurasgoesbackto1899whenaseverefreezewipedouttheorangebusinessinsouthernLouisiana.ThisfreezeimpactedthelivelihoodoftwoSiciliansJosephVaccaroandSalvadordAntoniVaccarosbrotherinlaw.AtthatmomentthetwoSicilianswereoperangthreeluggersaclassofboatstoshiporangestoNewOrleansfromdownrivergroves.Howeverfollowingthefreezetheyhadnomorecargo.TheythenstartedimporngbananasandcoconutsfromHondurasacountryfacingnodangersoffreezing.JosephstwootherbrothersLuccaandFelixjoinedtheminthisventurethatwaslatertobecomeVaccaroBros.Co.dAntonibeingtheCo..Howeverthisnewbusinessrequiredabiggershipthanthenyluggers.Tothisendtheyacquiredatwo-mastedschooner.LaCeibain1901 AfairdealwithbananaproducerssecureastronggrowerbaseIn1899thebananabusinessinHonduraswasmainlydominatedbyonecompanytheUnitedFruitCompany.Itwasatoughbusinesswithethicsvirtuallynonexistent.Tradershadnoparcularschedule.Attherststoptheskipperwouldsendmessengerstonofygrowerstosendtheirfruittothenextcall.ButiftheshipwasalreadyfullbeforereachingsomeplaceswhichhadbeenalertedthevesselwouldsendototheUnitedStatesleavingthegrowersharvesttorotonthebeach.DAntoniwasthersttradertocontractseverallargegrowerspayaxedpriceandtaketheenrecropwhetherloadedornotataspecicdate.AsaresultherapidlyexpandedhisbusinesstendingtoconcentratehisacviesamonggrowerssurroundingthevillagesofElPorvenirLaCeibaandBalfate.Howeverlogiscsremainchaoc...Nowhereinthiszoneexistedanythingresemblingaharbor.Whennotusingmulesorhumanbackstotransportbananasgrowershadtooattheirfruitdownriveronbargeswhichwhenallwaswellcouldbepoledmilesdownstreamandintotheseawheretheymetthebananashipssmallboatfortransfertodeepwater.Butmanymesduringtheyearsandbarschokedthestreamsthebargescouldnotpass.In1904FelixVaccaroobtainedaconcessionforcungapermanentchannelthroughthebaroftheriver.BeginningofthetwenethcenturytheconstruconofarailroadandapierchangesthesituaonradicallyWhenFelixVaccaroacquiredtheconcessionhealsobuiltafewmilesofnarrowgaugerailroadthatwouldtapmorebananaplantaons.TheVaccarorailroadinHondurasalsoplayedamajorroleinthenaonshistorybecauseitservedastheonlyinteriormeansofcommunicaononthenorthcoast.Thepossibletransportaonofthefruitinrailroadcribcarsdirectlytotheshipseliminatedseveraldangersaswellasdestrucveandimproperhandlingofthefruit.InaddionthelackofanappropriatebayinLaCeibamadeitnecessarytobuildapierthatwasstrongenoughtowithstandbothhurricanewindsandoceanstorms.9DIDYOUKNOWIn1901HonduranbananafarmershadtooattheirfruitdownrivertoLaCeiba.TheVaccarotrainrstrailroadinHonduras Thenewlyconstructedwharfbeganoperaonsin1910.Itslengthwas450feetoutintotheseaandanadequatedepthforalltypesofvesselsof17feet.Thisstructurepermiedtheunloadingofthebananastemsfromtherailroadcribcarsintotheyawningholdsofthesteamers.ForsomereasonsthecizensofElPorvenirrefusedtoletthelineenterthevillage.AsaconsequencetheVaccarorailroadbypassedthevillageandconnuedeasttoLaCeibawheretheyestablishedtheirheadquartersbringinggrowthtothecity.LaCeibaisBoomingWiththeintroduconofthetrainandtheconstruconofthepierthebananabusinessourishedinthearea.LaCeibaturnedintoasmalltownrequiringnewservices.In1912thankstotheCompanyssupportthecityacquireditsrstgravityoperatedpotablewatersupplysystemprovidedfromthelocalrivertogetherwithasewersystem.Starngin1917theCompanyinstalledareliablesupplyofelectricityandpubliclighngthatfunconedunlJanuary1974whentheCompanysoldthesystemtoagovernment-ownedenty.VaccaroBrothersCo.alsoobtainedpermissionfromthegovernmentofHondurastooperateacommercialbank.InFebruary1913theyopenedtheBancoAtlandainLaCeiba.Itwastherstcommercialbankoperanginthecountryoutsideofthecapitalcity.ItsoonbecamethedominantnancialagencyintheRepublicwithseveralbranches.TheCompanyestablishedforthepotablewatersupplyofLaCeibabeganitsoperaonsasasubsidiaryofVaccaroBrothersCo.andexpandedintotheiceandsodrinkmanufacturingbusinessandCerveceriaHondureaabrewery.In1916theybeganbrewingandsellingthefamousSalvaVidabeer.ThebreweryremainedaDoleassetunl2001whentheCompanysoldits97staketoSouthAfricanBreweriesP.L.C.DIDYOUKNOW10The1910pierinLaCeiba1912TheFirstSewerandwaterSystemaswellasthefrstelectricalsystemwereinstalled.TheBancoAtlandatoday 11DIDYOUKNOWInthe1920sAddionalInfrastructureBecomeNecessarytoAccompanytheCitysDevelopmentIn1914theExecuvePowerauthorizedVaccaroBrotherstoestablishafactoryfortheproduconofcookingoilssoapandvegetablelardfromcoconutsandotherplantsexistentinthissector.In1928theCompanyopenedadairybusiness.In1924theVaccaroBrothersCompanyconstructedahospitaltoprovidemedicalservicesforemployeestheirfamiliesandtheenrecommunity.ThehospitalwasnamedHospitalVicenteDAntoniamemorialtothenameoftheyoungestmemberofVaccaroBrothersCo.whodiedoftheSpanishuatage33.ThehospitalwasdonatedtotheVicentedAntoniFoundaonanon-protorganizaonmadeupofmembersfromtheStandardFruitCompanydeHondurasDoleandmembersoftheLaCeibaMunicipalitythatsllmanagesthehospitaltoday.In1927theCompanyalsofoundedtheMazapanSchool.MazapanSchoolisnowasmalleducaonalbilingualschooloeringanU.S.-stylecollegepreparatoryinstruconprogram.ItissllownedandoperatedbyDole.Amidstthelushtropicalvegetaonthe300studentsaendingMazapanSchoolbecomeuentinbothEnglishandSpanishandreceiveaU.S.HighSchooldiplomaandaHonduranBaccalaureatedegree.In1930theCompanyalsobuiltanairportandin1954astadiumandachurchbothdonatedtothecityofLaCeiba.TheBrewerytheSoapandCookingOilCompanyandtheDairyCompanyThehospitalin1924.Thehospitaltoday. DIDYOUKNOWTheSchoolin1927.TheSchooltoday.Theairport.Thestadiumin1954.Thechurchinthe50s.Thechurchtoday.InOctober1964CastleCookeiniallypurchaseda55interestinStandardFruit.FinallytheCompanyacquired100ofStandardFruitin1968.TodayDoleissllacveinHonduras.Itemploysover9000workersintheproduconofbananasandpineapplesandconnuestosupportthelocalcommuniesbymaintainingandinvesnginnumerouscommunityprograms.12 WHOSWHOForthissixthedionwehaveinterviewedMelquiadesHernandezHRDirectoratDolelourPackagedFoodsdivisionthePhilippines.Since1963DolelhasbeenanothersuperbexampleofhowDolehascontributedandsllcontributestobringsupporttoandempowerlocalcommunies.QHowhasDolecontributedtothedevelopmentofthePolomolokareasincethecompanyarrivedin1963AThroughoutitsmorethanforty-nineyearhistoryinPolomolokSouthCotabatoDolePhilippinesInc.hasbeenprovidingemploymentbusinessandlivelihoodopportuniestothousandsofresidentsinthecommunity.Dolehasearnedasolidreputaonofbeingthepreferredemployerintheregionwithitscompensaonandbenetpackagewhichisclearlysuperiortothosebeingoeredbyanyotheremployerintheregionandcomparabletothebeeremployerscountrywide.DolelmaintainsasetofcorporatevaluesforemostofwhichisitsvalueonPeople.HoweverPeoplewithinthemeaningofitscorporatevaluedoesnotlimititselftoDolesownemployees.Itincludesthatofconnuallyseekingtoimproveanddevelopthesocialculturalmoralandeconomicopportuniesofpeopleinthecommuniesincludingthoseinthefar-ungbarangayslocalcommunies.Dolebelievesthatthehigherpurposeofitsconnuedcorporateexistenceisinthedevelopmentofpeopleemployeesandnon-employeesalikeandtheirrespecvecommunies.AstheCompanyprogressessoshoulditspeopleandthecommunityaroundit.Webelievethisobjecvesetsitapartfromotherbusinessenterpriseswhommaybelessmindfuloftheirroleasagoodcorporatecizen.TruetoitscorporatesocialresponsibilitydirectintervenonshavebeenundertakenbyDoleintheareasofeducaonenvironmenthousingwaterhealthandmedicalcareinfrastructuretransportaonsafetyhygieneandsanitaoncommunityorganizaonaldevelopmentleisuresportsandrecreaonvalueformaonspiritualitylivelihoodassistancedisastercoordinaonandassistancetonameafew.Thesedirectintervenonsincludeextendingnancialandlogiscalsupporttechnicalassistancerepresentaonandcoordinaonwithproperagenciesandhands-onadministraononprojectsforthebenetofthecommunity.Dolelisproudofitsmanyaccomplishmentsandpioneeringcorporatesocialresponsibilityprojectswhichhastouchedthelivesofthousandsofpeopleovermanyyears.Theseprojectsareon-goingasitisenduringandwillconnuetobenetthepeopleandfuturegeneraons.13DolelspineappleplantaoninfrontofMtMatutum
