AfairdealwithbananaproducerssecureastronggrowerbaseIn1899thebananabusinessinHonduraswasmainlydominatedbyonecompanytheUnitedFruitCompany.Itwasatoughbusinesswithethicsvirtuallynonexistent.Tradershadnoparcularschedule.Attherststoptheskipperwouldsendmessengerstonofygrowerstosendtheirfruittothenextcall.ButiftheshipwasalreadyfullbeforereachingsomeplaceswhichhadbeenalertedthevesselwouldsendototheUnitedStatesleavingthegrowersharvesttorotonthebeach.DAntoniwasthersttradertocontractseverallargegrowerspayaxedpriceandtaketheenrecropwhetherloadedornotataspecicdate.AsaresultherapidlyexpandedhisbusinesstendingtoconcentratehisacviesamonggrowerssurroundingthevillagesofElPorvenirLaCeibaandBalfate.Howeverlogiscsremainchaoc...Nowhereinthiszoneexistedanythingresemblingaharbor.Whennotusingmulesorhumanbackstotransportbananasgrowershadtooattheirfruitdownriveronbargeswhichwhenallwaswellcouldbepoledmilesdownstreamandintotheseawheretheymetthebananashipssmallboatfortransfertodeepwater.Butmanymesduringtheyearsandbarschokedthestreamsthebargescouldnotpass.In1904FelixVaccaroobtainedaconcessionforcungapermanentchannelthroughthebaroftheriver.BeginningofthetwenethcenturytheconstruconofarailroadandapierchangesthesituaonradicallyWhenFelixVaccaroacquiredtheconcessionhealsobuiltafewmilesofnarrowgaugerailroadthatwouldtapmorebananaplantaons.TheVaccarorailroadinHondurasalsoplayedamajorroleinthenaonshistorybecauseitservedastheonlyinteriormeansofcommunicaononthenorthcoast.Thepossibletransportaonofthefruitinrailroadcribcarsdirectlytotheshipseliminatedseveraldangersaswellasdestrucveandimproperhandlingofthefruit.InaddionthelackofanappropriatebayinLaCeibamadeitnecessarytobuildapierthatwasstrongenoughtowithstandbothhurricanewindsandoceanstorms.9DIDYOUKNOWIn1901HonduranbananafarmershadtooattheirfruitdownrivertoLaCeiba.TheVaccarotrainrstrailroadinHonduras
