Costa Rica: Mobile Medical Units

Dole inaugurated a mobile medical unit that offers preventative medicine and specialized health attention for rural communities on the Atlantic Coast of Costa Rica.

In March of 2010, Dole Food Company and Spar, an Austrian supermarket chain, funded and established a mobile medical unit that provides health services while traveling to various communities. The transportable unit was donated to the Lions Club of Costa Rica, which is now responsible – with Dole’s support – for managing the unit, coordinating the medical staff’s planning and organizing health campaigns.

Though Costa Rica has a well-developed social security system, as well as local clinics in the majority of Atlantic Coast communities, this mobile medical facility is an additional tool to bring specialized medical services to remote areas, services that are mainly provided in urban areas.

Featuring three fully-equipped medical rooms, the mobile unit accommodates a variety of services, including but not limited to:

  • Blood donations
  • Vaccination campaigns
  • Pediatrics
  • Lab exams
  • Dentistry
  • Optometry and ophthalmology
  • Ultrasound scans
  • Vaginal cytology
  • Breast exam
  • Prostate exam
  • Osteoporosis analyses
  • Gastroscopy
  • General medicine

In its first year, the unit traveled to communities, such as Villafranca, Bataan, Rio Palacio, El Limbo, Siquirres and a dozen others along the Costa Rica’s Atlantic Coast. With three days spent in each location, Dole and Spar’s mobile medical unit was able to help approximately 5,000 people (including 2,000 Dole-related individuals).
