This planned community, located south of Limón in Costa Rica, was built by Dole Food Company to enhance the quality of life for its employees and their families.
Though rich in culture, Limón is one of the poorest areas in the country. In 1989, Dole designed and constructed Bananito, an affordable housing community for workers at its largest banana farm in Costa Rica. The community hosts modern infrastructure and conveniences, such as potable water, garbage collection and a well-designed and maintained road system, to name a few.
In addition to secure housing, Bananito residents have access to education, recreational area and commercial opportunities, including four schools, multiple playgrounds and sport fields, a healthcare clinic staffed with professional medical personnel and a shopping center. The schools offer basic education classes, home education, physical education, computer science and English. To facilitate the schedule of working parents, the town also provides a government-run nursery for young children.
